人々の情感的な共鳴を誘発させようとしているんです
中国大陸の巨大なインディーズミュージックシーンの中で、Re-TROS（中国名：重塑雕像的权利）というひときわ偉才を発揮するバンドがいる。Guitar&VoのHuadong(华东)、Bass&VoのLiumin(刘敏)、DrumsのMahui(马辉)の３人で構成されるRe-TROSは、先月のSUMMER SONIC 2011 Tokyoで、ついに彼らの日本で初となる演奏を果たした。その挑戦的なバンド名、北京カルチャーの力強さを感じさせる音楽、芸術的なアプローチ。実際に私はSUMMER SONICでのライブを観たが、素晴らしく完成されたショウだった。音楽としてはポストパンクというジャンルに括られているが、そんなジャンル分けにこだわるのは無意味だ。まるで演劇か映画でも観ているかのような感覚に震えた。今回の記事は、なかなか日本語では知ることのできない彼らのイントロダクション。バンドのリーダーでもあるGuitar&VoのHuadongにメールインタビューを敢行した。

──Re-TROSを結成してどれぐらいになりますか？
──How long are you playing as Re-TROS?
Re-TROSは2003年に結成されました。今8年間ぐらいの活動になります。
Re-tros was formed in 2003 , so,we’ve been playing together about eight years.
──Re-TROSを結成する前は何をしてた？３人が集まった経緯は？
──How did you gather with other members in Re-TROS? What did you do before starting Re-TROS?
私はベースのLiuminと、私の出身地、南京で出会いました。彼女は以前四川省でバンドを組んでいて、そのバンドで南京に来たんです。その後、私とLiuminは北京に来て、誰か私たちと一緒にバンドをやってくれる人を探していました。僕の友人がドラムのMahuiを紹介してくれて、今のRe-TROSのメンバーが集まり活動が始まりました。Re-TROSを始めるまでには紆余曲折がありましたよ。私は大学生の頃にドイツにいたんですが、1999年に中国に戻ってきました。中国に戻ってから、私はドラマーとしてバンドに所属していましたが、2001年に脱退しています。その頃は自分の未来や自分が進む道にとても悩んでいた時期でしたね。
I met Liumin( Bassist) in my hometown Nanjing when she performed with her old band from Sichuan in Nanjing, after that we came to Beijing to find someone to make a band with us,and a friend of mine introduced Mahui(Drummer) to me ,then we started to make Re-tros.I used to be in German at University and back to China in 1999,then I played in a band as drummer and left it in 2001,so that was a hard time for me before I started Re-tros in 2003, I was very confused then about my way and my future.
──Re-TROSのライブをSUMMER SONIC 2011 TOKYOで観ました。Re-TROSのライブはひとつのアートパフォーマンスのようで、とても感動しました。歌詞からは絶望や悲しさが見えますが、ライブを観ていて悲しみを感じることはありませんでした。たくましさ、強さを感じました。Re-TROSのコンセプトをぜひ聞かせてください。音楽で何を訴えようとしていますか？
──I saw your gig on Summer Sonic 2011. Re-TROS’s gig was like an art show. I was so impressed. The lyrics are representing something like miserable or sadness. But I don’t feel sad while your show. Your show gave us the strength. This is the just my impression. I really want to know the Re-TROS’s concept. What do you want to tell to people with your music?
ありがとう。非常に感受性が強いですね！そう、わたしたちはいつも暗いテーマを表現しているのですが、それを力強い声調で訴えています。そしてときには私たちはステージでストーリーテラーのようにふるまい、私たちの未来に対する嫌疑や不安を人々に感じてもらおうとしています。さらに、人々の情感的な共鳴を誘発させようとしているんです。
Thank you, you are a pretty sensitive person.Yes , we are always trying to express some tenebrous theme but with tough voice.Sometimes we prefer to behave as a storyteller on the stage and would let the people feel our suspicion and anxiety to the future through those stories , also evoke their emotional resonance.
“Re-TROS”という名前の２つの意味
──Re-TROSの正式なバンド名は“Rebuilding The Rights Of Statues”ですよね。そのバンド名にはどういう意味が込められているのでしょうか？
──Why did you name your band “Rebuilding The Rights Of Statues”?
私は言葉遊びが好きなので、２つの意味を持たせたんです。“Rebuilding The Rights Of Statues”という言葉は、中国語で表記すると２つの違った意味に受け取ることができるんです。その２つの意味はこうなります。
“彫像の権利を再構築する”
“彫像再建の権利”
私は、この名前を通して表現される強い姿勢が気に入っています。
This is like a word game , there are two different meaning behind this name if you read it in Chinese: “Rebuilding the rights of statues ” or ” The rights of rebuilding statues”, and I really like word games. And also I like the tough attitude which is expressed through this name.
──SUMMER SONIC 2011は、Re-TROSにとって初めての日本でのライブですよね。どうでしたか？
──On Summer Sonic, that was the first time for you to play in Japan. How was that?
とても素晴らしい体験でした。SUMMER SONICは世界中のフェスティバルの中でとても良いフェスティバルのうちのひとつです。あの舞台で演奏できたことは物凄く満足でした。これが私たちの日本へのファーストステップとなりました。とても良い第一歩を踏めたと思っています。
Yeah, that was a fantastic experience. Summer Sonic is one of the best Music Festival around the world, we were super pleased to perform there.This is our first step to Japan, I think we’ve made a good beginning.
──Re-TROSはよく北京や中国大陸での大きなフェスに参加していますよね。他の国でもライブ活動をしていますか？
──Re-TROS often plays in Beijing and big festival in China. Have you ever been to other foreign countries to play?
2007年にオースティンのSXSW(サウス・バイ・サウスウエスト)に参加して、同時にアメリカの東海岸をツアーで廻りました。また、タイ、カンボジア、ベトナムに2009年に東南アジアミニツアーとして行っています。2010年にはNYCでのCMJフェスティバルに出演しています。今年の３月にはUKのGang of Fourのオープニングアクトとして共にオーストラリア（ブリスベン・シドニー・メルボルン）を廻りました。５月にはシンガポールでのMusic Matters Festivalにも参加しています。私たちは、いろんな国・地域で演奏すること、違った景色を見ること、環境の違う人たちと出会い、違ったカルチャーに触れることが、心から好きなんです。
We have performed on South By Southwest(SXSW) in Austin and done a tour around East Coast in the USA in 2007; a little Southeast Asia tour in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam in 2009; CMJ Festival in NYC in 2010; toured with Gang Of Four as opening band in Australia( Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne) in this March and Music Matters Festival in Singapore in this May.We love to perform in different countries, see different views , face different people and touch differnt culture.

──これから新しい音源制作など、何か計画はありますか？
──Do you have any plans to make new CD? or anything else?
今私たちは新しい楽曲制作とレコーディングを進めています。新しいアルバムを今年の終わり頃に出す予定です。
Now we are working on some new songs and planing to record our new album end this year.
──Re-TROSの夢、目標は？
──What is Re-TROS’s dream?
うーん、ときたま思うのは、完璧なRe-TROSのアルバムを作り上げること。そして時には、デヴィッド・ボウイに会いたいななんて夢見ることもありますよ。SUMMER SONICの1週間後には、私たちはちょうど、「また日本でライブがしたい！」と思っていました。とにかく私たちは、私たちの夢のすべてがいつか現実になることを夢見ていますね。
Ah… I’m not sure. Sometimes we dreamed about a perfect Re-tros’s album , sometimes about meeting David Bowie, and one week earlier we’ve just dreamed about come to Japan again and have some shows. Anyway, we dreamed that all the dreams of us could come true someday.
